The Lanzarote wine guide

Area guide: Teguise

The old town keeps a single wine address, all five wineries sit outside the village, and the visits with a published price come down to two houses.

The wine of the Teguise area is in the surroundings, not in the town. The historic old town, which is also the gateway to La Geria, holds one wine shop only, Vinos y + La Villa on calle Reyes Católicos, and the five wineries all sit outside, between Guatiza and the farmland of San Bartolomé. Between wineries, wine shops, one wine bar and one tour operator, that adds up to eleven businesses, and the last four addresses fall in Playa Honda, in Tahiche and next to the El Grifo winery.

Of the eleven addresses, three have the visit confirmed, and two belong to the same house, because El Grifo splits its wine between the winery and the wine bar next door.

El Grifo, the house at kilometre 11

El Grifo has been making wine since 1775, and its grounds on the LZ-30 are the busiest wine spot in the area, with 4.4 out of 5 across more than 2,800 reviews. The wine museum occupies the house's old lagar, with the foundation stone of 1775 in view, and the visits go out to the vineyard that surrounds the winery, already inside the Paisaje Protegido de La Geria, a landscape where the black ash stores the little rain there is and the strength of the trade wind obliges growers to raise walls of stone. The grounds open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:30 and the guided visits go in until 17:15, so the plan works in the morning or in the mid-afternoon.

The house's visits come in four formats, and the table at the end sorts them out. The light one is the audio guide, 45 minutes of route with the audio in five languages and two closing glasses to drink in the wine bar, with under-17s paying no entrance. If you arrive without a booking, you buy the audio guide at the shop as long as there is room left. The Cata de Vinos Seleccionados gathers five wines in 35 minutes, adults only, with no visit to the winery. Wine Lovers takes two hours across vineyard, museum and family house, with a sparkling wine on arrival and a tasting of six wines with Canarian cheeses. The 95 € plan is the same route with a menu afterwards at the Mozaga restaurant. The website recommends booking ahead and, since the visit goes out to the vineyard, the house asks for a hat and sunscreen, in summer above all.

The Wine Bar EL GRIFO, on calle a Guadarfia, a step away from the winery, is the relaxed version of the same grounds. They pour fifteen wines by the glass, most of them at 6 €, and offer tastings of three wines for 12 € with three routes to pick from, from the run through malvasía to the colour comparison. The Canarian nibbling menu runs from the board of five cheeses with guava jam to the truchas de batata for dessert. The tastings are booked in advance, with limited places on the terrace. It opens Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 18:30 and the prices on the list carry the IGIC inside.

David Fernández, the small house of Guatiza

In Guatiza, up in the north of the island and the village of the Jardín de Cactus, David Fernández works plots all over the island by hand and makes only the traditional varieties of Lanzarote. On his website he presents himself as one of the few young growers on the island, and neither of his two plans goes beyond ten people. The tasting, at 25 €, lasts 45 minutes and goes glass by glass through five wines, each with the story of its label. The visit, at 35 €, lasts an hour and a half between the vine and the winery, dug into the volcanic rock, and ends with a tasting of a selection. Both prices include the IGIC. You book on his website as far as six months ahead, and he is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00, closed over the weekend, so the visit is a morning one.

The other three wineries, with no confirmed visit

None of the three confirms a visit, and that changes how you build the day.

Los Bermejos sits on the road that carries its name, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, and its website tells of a house from another era. For centuries it belonged to one of the most important families of Lanzarote, and the house itself says that, with almost no activity left in the year 2001, it had taken the lead in the island's winemaking within a few years. It opens Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 15:00 and carries a 4.6 built on almost 350 reviews.

In Guatiza two more wineries remain, and both sit at the same door number on calle Belladama, so you only search the address once. Olivina keeps a shop with fixed hours, Monday to Thursday from 11:30 to 13:30 and on Saturday from 12:00 to 13:30, with Friday and Sunday off. It sells with delivery from its website and gives its wines proper names, from Respiro to Alma de Maremoto, with a 5.0 from more than a hundred reviews. Of Bodega La Mareta, at the same doorway, there remains the phone number, 626 22 89 99, an unpublished schedule and a Facebook page that shows you nothing.

Where to drink and buy, from Tahiche to Playa Honda

Among the wine shops of the area, there is almost always one open. In the village, Vinos y + La Villa is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 19:30 and on Sunday morning, from 9:00 to 14:00, with Saturday closed. In Tahiche, VinosLuci opens all seven days in the afternoon, from 16:00 to 18:30, with the phone in plain sight, 650 38 15 32, and a 5.0 with few reviews still. In Playa Honda, the BAR FUSIÓN MAYOR 22 on calle Mayor closes later than the rest of the area, from 10:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, until 22:30 on Fridays and Saturdays and from 12:00 to 18:00 on Sunday, with a 5.0 that rests on just four reviews.

On Sunday there are three addresses with published hours: the village one in the morning, VinosLuci in the afternoon in Tahiche and the Playa Honda bar from 12:00 to 18:00.

Next to El Grifo's wine bar, on the same calle a Guadarfia, sits Vinos el campesino, a wine shop with a 3.6 that publishes no hours. And on calle de la Popa in Playa Honda sits Private Tours, the area's tour operator, which you call on 638 47 55 79 because its website does not answer.

Fitting the day together

If what is on the cards is sitting down and tasting, the wine bar's tasting of three wines at 12 € does the job without covering any ground. For whoever wants to understand the cultivation without hurry, David Fernández's visit takes an hour and a half between vine and winery, with groups of ten at the most. And with children in tow, the light plan is at El Grifo, where under-17s pay nothing for the audio guide, and the Jardín de Cactus rounds off the morning in Guatiza.
