El Grifo is a wine shop and wine bar attached to a winery founded in 1775, one of Spain’s oldest and the oldest in the Canary Islands. In San Bartolomé, within the winery complex, it gives wine travellers a way into the estate’s Lanzarote wines: whites from Malvasía Volcánica, Vijariego Blanco and Moscatel de Alejandría, reds and Listán-based blends, plus an orange wine and a traditional-method Brut Nature. Some fruit comes from old vines and from vineyards in La Geria. A visit can combine a tasting with the wine museum, the library, harvest experiences and a look at the vineyard and winemaking. The bar is a useful starting point for trying bottles such as Lías, Ariana or Vendimia de Invierno and for understanding how a historic winery keeps experimenting with unusual varieties and styles. It is worth stopping for travellers who want both the agricultural side and the tasting side in one place, rather than only a shop.
