Vega de Yuco is a winery in Masdache, in the municipality of Tías, on the Lomo de Tese ridge between the Parque Natural de los Volcanes and the protected landscape of La Geria. For more than two decades it has made wine under the D.O. Lanzarote, combining handwork with current equipment. The core is the island's pre-phylloxeric varieties: Malvasía Volcánica and Listán Negro lead, with Diego and Moscatel also used. The vines grow in holes dug through the lapilli, the volcanic ash that has covered the ground since Timanfaya erupted in the 18th century and which holds moisture in a harsh climate. The range is broad: dry and semi-sweet whites, rosés, reds, sparkling and sweet wines, a line of easier-going bottles, plus the Single Cask Althos collection. For wine travellers it is a worthwhile stop: you see how vines are grown in ash and taste Malvasía Volcánica in several styles. The winery has a wine-tourism side, so arrange the visit in advance and pair it with other cellars in La Geria.
