Bodegas El Grifo, in San Bartolomé, occupies a historic estate with winemaking roots going back to 1775; it is one of Spain’s oldest wineries and the oldest in the Canary Islands. It farms 40 hectares in La Geria on volcanic ground, growing Malvasía Volcánica, Vijariego Blanco, Listán and Moscatel de Alejandría; some vines are pre-phylloxeric, and the team also experiments with winter harvests for a very limited Malvasía. The range covers whites aged on lees, a Moscatel orange wine, red blends such as Ariana and traditional-method Brut Nature sparkling wines, the first made in Lanzarote. A visit can include the vineyard and winery, the Wine Museum explaining La Geria’s landscape, a tasting at the wine bar and a stay in a boutique hotel inside the estate; there is also a library and harvest experiences. It is a worthwhile stop for wine travellers who want to see how a historic winery mixes local varieties, experimentation and wine tourism without reducing the place to a postcard.
