In Montaña Blanca, inside the protected landscape of La Geria, this family winery farms vines planted in hollows dug into the lapilli (rofe) thrown out by the Timanfaya volcanoes in the 18th century. Ignacio J. Romero Perera and Luise Guttenberger tend those plots by hand and organically, keeping the island's traditional grape varieties, and make low-intervention wines under two labels with distinct profiles: Tarabaste and Yesquera. Volcanic soil, near-constant wind, scarce rainfall and Atlantic influence shape dry, expressive wines that taste of their plot. The visit includes a walk between the vines, past cones of volcanic ash, explaining how the terrain was formed and what labour has kept it cultivated for generations; it ends at the winery with a tasting of the organic wines. Worth a stop if you want to see hoyo-and-soco viticulture first hand and taste local varieties from a small, directly run family project closely tied to the farming landscape.
