Visiting Lanzarote wineries with children
El Grifo does not charge children up to 17 for entry, Rubicón charges teenagers 5 € and Finca Testeina brings the chocolate. Almost no winery tells you.
A visit is not a tasting, and the difference is what saves the family plan. Tastings sold on their own are advertised for adults only, but the visit is house, vineyard and landscape, and that works just as well with a child by the hand. In Lanzarote the map of visits with children is short, and nearly all of it fits in the same LZ-30 corridor, between San Bartolomé and La Geria.
Three plans publish their conditions for children: the El Grifo audioguide, which its wine bar also runs in San Bartolomé, the Rubicón guided visit and the Finca Testeina sunset outing, the last two in La Geria. At the other wineries the policy on children is not published, and there a phone call settles it.
El Grifo: children pay nothing for the audioguide
The audioguide costs 15 € a person, and anyone up to 17 pays nothing, the most generous rule on the island. The walk takes 45 minutes and ends with a tasting of two wines. The winery opens Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 18:30, and closes for the weekend.
The same visit is sold at the house's wine bar too, on calle a Guadarfia in San Bartolomé, a few steps from the winery, with free entry for children.
Rubicón: the open grounds and the 13:30 visit
At the weekend, when El Grifo closes, the plan moves to Rubicón. On its website the house keeps the grounds open daily, from 10:00 to 19:00, for anyone who wants to come in without a ticket. The walk is a visit in itself: the La Geria estate, the stone walls, the vines and the shop next door for a bottle to take home.
For children, La Geria is an odd landscape to begin with: vines poking out of holes dug into the black ash, walls curving into semicircles against the wind. Free entry lets them see it up close.
The guided visit is called Entre Muros y Viñedos Centenarios, starts at 13:30 from Monday to Sunday and lasts 45 minutes. It costs 22 €, and teenagers from 11 to 17 get in for 5 €. For the youngest, the website says nothing. The house asks you to book ahead, wear comfortable clothes and shoes and, in summer, a hat and sun protection.
There is a second guided visit, El Legado Rubicón, with a tasting of three wines and a route through the vineyard, the family house and both wineries, the old one and the modern one. Its price is not published.
Finca Testeina: sunset with chocolate
The LZ-30 that passes El Grifo runs two kilometres further on to Finca Testeina, at kilometre 13, already inside La Geria. Here your children are no longer just company: the sunset visit charges 26 € to adults and 15 € to children aged 5 to 17. It is an hour and a half of guided walking between the vines, with a wine tasting and chocolate made by hand on the island. On Google the visit holds 4.9 stars from 381 reviews.
The plan runs on two days a week only: Wednesdays in English and Thursdays in Spanish. And the winery closes Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. There is a second option, a guided visit with tasting and chocolate, scheduled every day, though no price is announced.
The long tastings, for adults only
Even at El Grifo, the house most open to children, the rest of the line-up requires visitors to be of age. The Vinos Seleccionados tasting is 30 € for five wines in 35 minutes, the Wine Lovers plan goes up to 50 € for two hours and six wines, and the one that ends with a set menu at the restaurant reaches 95 €. The wine bar has the same tastings at the same prices. At Rubicón and at Testeina the published conditions set no minimum age, and they do not clarify what a child gets to taste there either.

With children, depending on the day
If the day off falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the choice narrows to Rubicón. You can walk the grounds without paying, and there is a guided visit too. On weekdays there is more room: El Grifo's audioguide leaves the children off the bill, and Testeina's sunset adds the chocolate as long as it is a Wednesday or a Thursday. For a tasting without a visit there is no shortcut: keep it for a day without children.
