Winery and wine shop hours in Lanzarote

Most wineries open Monday to Friday in the morning, and Sunday leaves nine doors open. For the evening, the wine moves into the city and to the beach, where six wine shops stay open late.

Wine on Lanzarote runs on two calendars, and knowing which one you are looking at is the difference between a tasting and a wasted drive. The first is the calendar of the fields: wineries open in the morning from Monday to Friday and shut once the day's work is done, so if you arrive in mid-afternoon you find the shutter down, no bad luck involved. The second is the calendar of the glass: wine venues that come alive as the evening draws in, above all in the capital and the beach areas. Almost every business with published hours fits one of the two.

Here are the 36 schedules that wineries, wine shops and tour operators publish, sorted by area and with each business's phone number to confirm the day that applies. Before the tables come four things that change the plan: how the week splits, what happens on Sunday, where the shortest windows are, and which seasons these general hours do not cover.

How the week splits

Ten of the seventeen wineries end their day at lunch and never reopen. Los Bermejos starts at eight in the morning, David Fernández at nine and Vulcano at ten, and in all three the last customer walks in before three in the afternoon. These are vineyard hours: up early, with no afternoon to make up for it.

The weekend leaves the list short, and the case that surprises is El Grifo, which closes Saturday and Sunday: its 10:00 to 18:30 schedule only runs from Monday to Friday. A short group holds out all seven days: Bodega La Geria, Rubicón and Stratvs on the wine route, plus El Lagar de Baco, VinosLuci, Los Almacenes and El Bar Fusión Mayor 22.

After eight in the evening seven doors stay open, and six of them are wine shops. In Arrecife that is Katu and Strava, in Puerto del Carmen La Rika, in Playa Blanca El Lagar de Baco and Brunchi, and in Playa Honda El Bar Fusión Mayor 22. The seventh is Lavatrekking, in Costa Teguise, a tour operator that closes at nine.

Five businesses cut the day in two with the siesta in between: Guiguan from Monday to Friday, El Vino de Fran closing at ten and coming back at half past four, Brunchi on a double shift. Testeina splits Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Katu splits the Thursday. Four more open at eight: Las Cadenas, Los Bermejos, El Vino de Fran and Roca Negra, which only rises early on Saturday.

The hours, for that matter, do not tell the whole story. In several wineries on the list visits stand unconfirmed, so before going for one it is worth checking whether the house actually runs it. The confirmed visits go house by house in another guide on this site.

The areas, one by one

The areas follow the groups the guide sorts the island into, and two of them break the mental map. The La Geria one gathers houses from Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza and reaches as far as Uga and Playa Blanca. The Teguise one takes the town, Guatiza, Tahiche and Playa Honda. In the tables the days are abbreviated, from Mon to Sun.

La Geria

The wine zone concentrates twelve doors, and a full day fits in it almost any day of the week. Las Cadenas, in La Vegueta, runs from eight in the morning to half past six without a break, Monday to Saturday. Barreto keeps its own pace from half past ten to half past four, also Monday to Saturday. The Casa del Vino Canario receives visitors on the square of the Museo del Campesino, from ten to three. Winelanz, in Uga, stretches its Saturday out to four in the afternoon.

Teguise

El Grifo's wine bar, in San Bartolomé, opens half an hour later than the winery and closes at the same hour, Monday to Friday. In the town itself, Vinos y + La Villa closes on Saturday but opens on Sunday morning. El Bar Fusión Mayor 22, in Playa Honda, is one of the few that never take a day off.

Arrecife

In the capital four of the five doors are wine shops. The morning shift goes to Territorio Sibarita, which closes at half past one from Monday to Saturday. The night belongs to Katu and Strava. Strava takes Monday and Tuesday off, and on Sunday it closes at five. Lágrima de Malvasía, which is a winery and an oil mill, is the only winery of the capital on the list, and it works from nine to two on weekdays.

Puerto del Carmen

In the tourist area of the south wine lives at the two ends of the day. The morning belongs to the shops on weekdays, and the night to La Rika, which does not open until seven and stays open until eleven, Monday to Saturday. Wine Tours Lanzarote, the fourth door, is open from nine to five with Saturday morning as well. None of the four opens on Sunday.

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca adds two doors to the list, both open into the evening. Brunchi works its two shifts from Monday to Saturday, ten to three and six to ten. The Museo Atlántico, the door of the excursions, is open from nine to six. The one that never rests goes in the tables with the La Geria zone: El Lagar de Baco. It is the seven-day wine shop, from midday to eleven at night, with a kitchen.

The north and Costa Teguise

In the north the list comes down to one door, Los Almacenes in Haría, from ten to six all seven days of the week. Costa Teguise has its own in Lavatrekking, open from Monday to Friday.

Outside the areas

Three wineries fit none of the areas above and go at the end of the list: Guiguan in Tajaste, La Florida in El Islote and Vega de Yuco next to the camino El Cabezo. All three are open on weekdays only, and at La Florida the shift never gets past two in the afternoon.

The nine that open on Sunday

Nine of the 36 doors open on Sunday. Four of them make up the La Geria route. Bodega La Geria puts its opening back to eleven and closes at seven. Rubicón and Stratvs do not change their weekday hours, and neither does El Lagar de Baco, in Playa Blanca. Of the other five, El Bar Fusión Mayor 22, of Playa Honda, drops its opening to midday, from twelve to six. Vinos y + La Villa opens from nine to two and Strava, in Arrecife, from twelve to five. VinosLuci, in Tahiche, and Los Almacenes, in Haría, keep the hours they have always had.

The short windows

Six businesses open in windows so short that the trip gets built around them. Martinón only takes visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from nine to half past two. Roca Negra picks Saturday morning, eight to two, and does not even publish a phone number. Lanzarote Natural leaves just two hours at lunchtime, Monday to Thursday. Olivina gathers two morning hours on weekdays and an hour and a half on Saturday at midday. Testeina spreads its week in windows of an hour and a half or two, two of them in the afternoon. And VinosLuci settles into the same mid-afternoon every day, from four to half past six.

What these hours do not include

The hours on the list are the general ones each house publishes, and they carry no season. The August hours are not here, nor the breaks for the grape harvest, nor the closures for local festivals. If the trip falls in one of those weeks, the business's website and its Google Maps page settle the doubt before you drive out there. The Maps page, at times, announces the special hours of the season.

The plan, depending on the day

If the wine day falls on a weekday morning, there is plenty of island to choose from. If it falls on a weekend, the route narrows to the three La Geria houses that open every day, and the night goes to the wine shops of the capital and the beach. And if the trip runs in August or around the harvest, the season hours get confirmed with the house that same day, because the general ones do not cover it.
