The Lanzarote wine guide

Group and corporate experiences at the wineries of Lanzarote

Four houses advertise groups on their websites. Every price they publish is per person, and none of them publishes a group rate.

For two people, a winery visit is a booking page: you pick a plan, you pay and you turn up. For twenty, the sums change, and in Lanzarote they change in a very concrete way. Four houses advertise groups on their websites, and every price they publish is per person. Everything else, the group rate and the conditions any company asks about first, appears on none of those pages: you request it by email, and each house asks for it in its own way.

And where a website gives no answer, we tell you that too, because planning on a number that does not exist is how a team day goes wrong.

El Grifo: capacity by plan and private visits

At El Grifo the plan you choose sets the group size. The long visit with a tasting of six wines is capped at twelve people, the one that adds lunch at the Mozaga restaurant stops at ten, and both are adults only, like the short tasting of five wines. The way out for groups with children is the audio guide, because anyone up to 17 pays no entrance fee. The four plans range from the 15 € audio guide to the 95 € plan with menu, all of them Monday to Friday, with the winery closed at the weekend.

For the group that prefers the place to itself, the house offers private visits subject to availability, arranged by email at [email protected]. The guided visits come in Spanish and English, and the audio guide adds French, Italian and German.

Finca Testeina: the estate that works for groups

Testeina is the closest thing to an events provider among the island's houses. Its website has a groups section where you have to check availability and tell them what event you have in mind, and it advertises tastings for private groups with the wines of Bodegas Vega de Yuco: themed tastings, wine with chocolate, blind tasting and pairings with local produce. They tailor routes and visits for groups too. The workshop of mojo sauces and gofio paste, which their site marks as an activity for groups and corporate incentives only, comes with a tasting of those same wines while everyone makes their own.

The ready-made plan, for whoever would rather not organise anything bespoke, is the sunset visit with tasting and chocolate, at 26 € per adult and 15 € for ages 5 to 17, which runs in English on Wednesdays and in Spanish on Thursdays. On Tuesdays, from 17:30 to 19:00, the Malvasía Volcánica workshop is offered in English, with four wines of that grape tasted at the estate. The setting helps: a 16th-century house at the foot of the Testeina volcano, in the middle of the La Geria protected landscape.

Bodega La Geria: from eight up, by email

The winery that shares its name with the area lists groups among its services and adds the table to the plan, with its restaurant and the taberna La Cepa. The guided visit goes out every day at 10:00, and there are versions with a wine tour and with a tasting, though none of them publishes a price: you ask for the amount when you book.

The group rules are written on the website. From eight people up, you have to write first to [email protected]. Tickets go on sale twelve days before each date, and the tour is not accessible for anyone who walks with difficulty, with pushchairs kept out of the route, though the house saves space to leave them. The website answers in English, French and German.

David Fernández: ten seats and the session is yours

In Guatiza, the village of the Jardín de Cactus, David Fernández puts the number up front: his two experiences take ten people at most per session. A group of ten fills the session and has it to itself, with a tasting of five wines at 25 € or the hour-and-a-half visit at 35 €, IGIC included in both prices. The visit passes through the vineyard and down into the winery they have dug into the volcanic rock, and their site presents it as a small-group format where there is time to ask questions. The booking calendar accepts dates up to six months ahead, and confirmation arrives on the spot, just what you need to move a company plan with time to spare.

What nobody publishes

What's missing is what an organiser asks about first. None of the four shows a group rate, with or without a discount. None explains how a company gets invoiced, with which VAT, or whether menus are fixed in advance. And not all of them say whether your group shares the visit with other travellers: at El Grifo the cap is per plan and the standard visit is not advertised as private, at David Fernández ten seats close the session, and at Testeina the tastings for private groups carry private in the name. At La Geria, what happens from eight people up gets decided in the email their website asks for.

For a celebration with a date

If the occasion does not call for a private room, there are dated plans where the group stays together without anyone organising anything. Stratvs programmes a music session every Saturday from 13:00 to 15:30, with no price published. Rubicón brings jazz into the winery, with October sessions at 25 €. And the Casa del Vino Canario, next to the Museo del Campesino, has scheduled themed tastings at 35 €. These are per-person tickets with a fixed date, not group plans, so they work for a celebration if the day suits everyone.

Which house for which group

If the group fits into a David Fernández session, that is the easy house, and the plan is settled on their website without phone calls. If it goes past ten, the first move is to write, because El Grifo arranges private visits, Testeina puts tastings together to order and La Geria, from eight up, also wants an email. With a table in the plan, the El Grifo menu covers visit and meal in one go, and at La Geria the taberna adds the meal to the winery day. If the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, La Geria is the one of the four that opens at the weekend. And in every version the first action stays the same: date and number of people in writing, because group conditions live only on the other side of the inbox.
