What it costs to visit a winery in Lanzarote
From 15 to 95 € per person. Almost everything you pay for includes a tasting, and only one plan adds the meal.
For 15 € you get an audio guide to walk around El Grifo and two glasses at the end. For 95 €, the same house seats you for a meal in its restaurant after a two-hour visit. Between those two figures fall all the island's visits with a published price, though not every house publishes one: these four do.
Understanding how the grapes grow here is part of what you pay for. The volcanic ash of La Geria holds on to the little rain that falls, and the semicircular stone walls slow a trade wind that never lets up. Vine rows do not stretch into the distance here. Each vine sits in its own hollow, and that landscape reads better up close than through a car window. All four houses take the visit out to the vineyard.
El Grifo: four plans, from audio guide to menu
El Grifo has been making wine since 1775, and its website presents it as one of the ten oldest wineries in Spain. The wine museum occupies the original press house, where the foundation stone still stands, and the vineyard grows on La Geria, a few steps from the winery.
The lightest plan is the audio guide: a 45-minute walk through the winery and the vineyard with the audio on your phone, ending with two wines at the wine bar. The audio runs in Spanish, English, French, Italian and German, and minors up to 17 pay no entrance fee. If you arrive without a booking, you can buy it at the shop as long as there is room.
The Vinos Seleccionados tasting costs 30 €: five wines in 35 minutes, no winery visit, adults only. It opens with the sparkling wines of Malvasía volcánica and closes on the reds, in Spanish or in English.
The long plan is Wine Lovers, at 50 €. Two guided hours with a sparkling welcome, a walk through the vineyard, a visit to the museum, the family house and the library, and a final tasting of six wines with Canarian cheeses. Twelve people per group at most, adults only.
And the 95 € plan adds the table. The visit is the same two hours, and afterwards comes the menu at the house's restaurant, in Mozaga, with the winery's wines. Ten people per session.
Bodegas Rubicón: the 22 € visit and what comes free
Rubicón occupies the Cortijo de La Geria, an estate that appears in documents from 1570, and opens its grounds every day from 10:00 to 19:00 with no entrance fee. Seeing the place, having something on the terrace and taking a bottle home from the shop costs nothing, and for many people that is exactly why it is the first stop in La Geria.
The guided visit is called Entre Muros y Viñedos Centenarios: 45 minutes for 22 €, with a 5 € entrance for minors aged 11 to 17. According to the house, the route explains the landscape, the history of the estate and the winemaking, and the tasting varies from one visit to the next, two or three wines with artisan cheeses from the island. There is a second visit, El Legado Rubicón, with no published price.
Bodega David Fernández: the unhurried tasting of the north
David Fernández works small parcels all over the island and makes his wine in Guatiza, the village of the Jardín de Cactus, up north. His winery is dug into the volcanic rock, he grows only traditional Lanzarote varieties, and his website presents him as one of the few young winegrowers on the island.
Both plans run with groups of no more than ten people. The tasting is 25 € for five wines talked through in 45 minutes, glass by glass, with the story of each label. The visit, at 35 €, lasts an hour and a half: a walk through the vineyard, down into the winery and a tasting at the end. Both prices include IGIC, and you book on the winery's own website up to six months ahead.
Finca Testeina: the sunset visit with chocolate
Testeina is a 16th-century house right in the middle of the protected landscape of La Geria, and the wines you taste come from Bodegas Vega de Yuco. The plan costs 26 €: a guided visit through the vineyards and the old house, with a tasting of two wines and artisan chocolate from the island.
It runs only two days a week, Wednesdays in English and Thursdays in Spanish. Minors aged 5 to 17 pay 15 €.

Before you book
Booking runs through each house's website. El Grifo and Rubicón recommend doing it ahead, and at David Fernández the calendar lets you book up to six months in advance. And hat and sunscreen for the vineyard visits, which happen under open sky: El Grifo and Rubicón both ask for it.
Which plan to choose
If you travel with children, the El Grifo audio guide is free for them, and Testeina's sunset with chocolate is the other plan that takes them along, once the sun eases off. If you want to understand the growing without rushing, the David Fernández visit gives you an hour and a half with groups of ten and time to ask. And if wine is the centre of your day, the El Grifo plan with the menu takes up a whole morning or afternoon and saves you choosing a restaurant.
